Book design experience with idesignbooks

Whatever kind of publication design you have, I look forward to discussing your project, what your needs are, to find out how I can help you design a beautiful book. You may want only content design, or cover design, or you may want complete production management. You'll get a comprehensive and professional approach because because I am serious about my work, have experience, and I love book design.

Book design planning and communication

My experience with numerous book projects in both design and production give me an understanding that, I think, can benefit your project. A book design project can be fun and rewarding, but it is important to have a plan, to have materials prepared, and to understand the details of the project. No matter how simple a design project might be, the project will benefit from our communication. I love the work I do with books and I pledge to go over all the details of your project to your satisfaction.

Discussing the concept of your book - Planning the scope of your project

If you are looking for a book designer, you must have a manuscript or a very good idea for a book you want to produce. Whether you are a trade publisher or a self publishing author, you probably have a text ready or almost ready for design. Perhaps you have questions about some part of the book design process.

I can answer questions in the first consultation, probably begin work on the book design while the project is still being planned. We can discuss the concept of the book with regards to it's market, audience, size, whatever concerns make it competitive, so we have an idea of style and any budget limitations or details that still need to be met. My goal is to save time and money through communication and planning.

More than a software program

Image management - be design & print ready

In our first discussion of the book design project we can determine if you have any images going in the book and how they need to be handled, if they are ready for the book design process. We can address the need for image editing, if there is scanning or resizing to do, and if the image resolutions are appropriate. Having done a storyboard or plan of the image placement in the book is the best first step to having a book with images ready to design. I can help you with this in our first consultation. We can find out if your materials are ready for design and print.

Attention to typographic detail - composition, copy editing, and proofing

Design ready means having text files that are already copy edited. This will save time when initial layouts can be proofed. It also saves money because copyfitting and typography the book designer has to do will be minimal, and appropriate to the finish copy.

With an initial page design I can address any issues of copyfitting with regard to type size, number of pages, word and letter spacing. With your design ready files I can quickly turn around preliminary layouts ready for review. For almost twenty years I have been working with Quark Xpress design software. This program allows me to use my typographic expertise to make your book a beautiful book. I am also open to working with Indesign.

Design & Pre Press cost saving

Book design is a step by step process. I know what goes into the design of a beautiful book and how book design can effect publishing. During initial consultation, we can begin to set up the planning of your project. Through communication, answering each others questions, we can determine ahead of time the work involved in designing your book or publication. We can set up a fee schedule, a by the hour or task related cost structure, whereby there will be no hidden costs because we will know what's involved with every step of your project.

My pledge : our communication and my experience will make your book a beautiful book

What are you looking for? Confident professional book design. Maybe you are looking for help planning a self published book. Or you're a university press or independent publisher and you just want the design of a cover for a trade book. Maybe you just want page design and that's all. You want someone that can upload some files and turn around a preliminary layout for you to approve, then move on to completing the design to be sent a PDF file, or a postscript file, for production. Maybe you want a book designer to work with a printer or book manufacturer. I can help design your book, or cover, and manage the production. I'll help in any way I can to design your publication. My attention to detail and standards of typographic excellence will make your book a beautiful book.
