No matter how much you talk about wearable tech it is never enough. Fashion and technology are walking hand-in-hand at various platforms reinventing the wheel of how and what we wear. In that league, Nik Bentel Studio, which has been pushing the boundaries of product design and fashion to exemplary levels has come up with a 4-channel mixer and speaker that women can carry like a bag.

What? A sound system that doubles as a bag? Boombox, are you listening? This uncanny bag + speaker + mixer doesn’t have your heavy, box-like aesthetic; instead, it takes on a chic appearance – sort of like EDC for women. It is inspired by Nik Bentel’s own Tati Bag, which has a nice leather sheen and top flap, which pulls up from the body of the bag to reveal the interior section. The Tati Fête Bag: Speaker + Mixer shares the same appearance, but with a transparent body revealing its electronic guts, yet being aptly functional.

Designer: Nik Bentel Studio

This unconventional speaker-mixer hybrid continues on Bentel’s exploration of unusual yet functional. It may not thrive on the bulky aesthetic of the boombox, but it does wear the same usability fabric, where you can carry quality music along, playing in the hand instead of above the shoulder, right behind your ear.

The speaker bag is designed to be your personal sound system but will be available in limited quantity. The onboard mixer features a functional 4-channel audio mixer and would set you back $400. It is available in two: black and white color options. Each of these speaker bags is made by hand in the designer’s New York studio through precision-machined translucent acrylic, which showcases the circuitry and hardware inside, and delivers a nice retro-modern appeal.

Instead of the original inspiration’s leather top flap, this 8″ x 12″ x 1–2″ bag features a magnetic closure and is powered by DC 5V. Equipped with a 4-channel mixer, the built-in speaker is compatible with CD players, phones, and amplifiers, and includes both 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm stereo jack plugs. It connects wirelessly via Bluetooth and supports a stereo/mono switch for added mixing flexibility. Designed to be carried as handbag, this mixer combines functionality and fashion, making it both a statement piece and a tribute to music culture. For a music lover, it’s a stylish way to show their passion.

A cool aspect of this speaker bag is a built-in LED display that shows decibel levels in real time. The adjustable display is made of a 16-bit two-color LED matrix and is nicely positioned to create a fun visual flair. The controls on the speaker bag are simple, you have a main volume knob and four-channel knobs for each option.

I haven’t worn a pair of sunglasses for a long time, ever since I started wearing transition glasses. But I know that a lot of people use them as fashion pieces, aside from actually protecting their eyes from the sun. If you love style that’s more than skin deep, the Porsche Design P’8954 sunglasses will feel like a match made in heaven. These sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory—they’re a wearable tribute to one of the most celebrated sports cars in automotive history: the Porsche 911 Targa.

Porsche Design’s latest eyewear masterpiece, the P’8954, draws direct inspiration from the design elements of the 911 Targa, a car known for its unique blend of open-air freedom and iconic style. Just as the Targa’s instantly recognizable roll bar revolutionized the world of convertibles, the P’8954 sunglasses reimagine classic sunglass design with a bold, innovative twist. The P’8954’s frame architecture is a nod to the Targa’s legendary Targa bar—a distinctive, brushed-metal element that defines the silhouette of the car. This influence is reflected in the sunglasses’ striking double bridge and the seamless integration of titanium and rubber, echoing the mix of strength and refinement that defines the 911 Targa itself.

Design: Porsche Design

Crafted from lightweight, high-performance titanium, the P’8954 is as durable as it is elegant. The rubberized temples not only add a sporty accent but also deliver a secure, comfortable fit—mirroring the way the Targa’s design balances excitement and practicality. The lenses are made from premium polycarbonate, offering exceptional clarity, scratch resistance, and 100% UV protection. Whether you’re driving with the top down or strolling through the city, your vision is shielded with the same uncompromising standards that Porsche brings to its luxury vehicles.

The P’8954 doesn’t just borrow the Targa’s silhouette but actually channels its spirit. The sunglasses feature a geometric aviator shape that’s both classic and futuristic, and the double bridge is a direct homage to the Targa’s roll bar. The brushed metal finish and the Porsche Design logo on the temples add a touch of understated luxury. Each colorway of the P’8954 is inspired by finishes and details found on the 911 Targa, from sleek blacks to metallic silvers and golds. Every pair arrives in a high-quality case, underscoring the sense of exclusivity and craftsmanship.

While Porsche Design is a perennial favorite among men, the P’8954’s unisex design appeals to a broad spectrum of style lovers. Women, collectors, and fans of both fashion and automotive excellence will find something to adore in these sunglasses. For collectors, especially, the P’8954 represents a rare fusion of two worlds, bringing luxury eyewear and legendary automotive design together, with limited production numbers stacking on even more desirability. And of course, if you’re a Porsche 911 Targa enthusiast, these sunglasses are a wearable celebration of your passion.

If you’re a sneaker enthusiast or a fashion-forward person who loves infusing your wardrobe with a bit of edge, there’s an exciting new collaboration you need to know about: the Vans OTW x FDMTL collection. This partnership brings together the timeless appeal of Vans’ iconic silhouettes, specifically the Old Skool 36 and the Half Cab, with the intricate craftsmanship and denim artistry of Japanese label FDMTL. It’s a match made in sneaker heaven, blending skate culture with the sophisticated world of premium Japanese textiles.

Vans’ OTW (Off the Wall) line is all about pushing creative boundaries while staying true to the brand’s skateboarding roots. Think classic silhouettes reimagined through collaborations with cutting-edge designers and artists. The Vans OTW x FDMTL collection is a perfect example, merging California skate style with Japanese craftsmanship. FDMTL (short for “Fundamental”), a Tokyo-based brand, founded in 2005, has built a cult following thanks to its obsession with Japanese denim. It is revered for its meticulous patchwork, sashiko stitching, and boro-inspired textiles which is a nod to Japan’s centuries-old tradition of mending and reinforcing clothing. Each piece tells a story, making it a favorite among collectors and those who appreciate garments with soul.

Design: Vans OTW x FDMTL

The Old Skool 36 is a beloved Vans icon, instantly recognizable for its low-top silhouette and signature side stripe. In this special collaboration, FDMTL brings its signature patchwork denim to the table. The uppers feature layers of indigo and sashiko stitching, creating a textured, lived-in effect that makes each pair unique. The patchwork isn’t just for show. It’s actually a tribute to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, celebrating beauty in imperfection. Look closer, and you’ll spot FDMTL’s attention to detail: contrast stitching, frayed edges, and a mix of denim shades that feel both rugged and refined. It’s a sneaker that looks equally at home with a floaty summer dress or your favorite pair of distressed jeans. And of course, you get all the comfort and durability that Vans is famous for—padded collars, grippy waffle soles, and cushioned insoles.

The Half Cab, a mid-top classic originally designed by skate legend Steve Caballero, gets a similar FDMTL makeover. The shoe’s sturdy construction is the perfect canvas for FDMTL’s textile wizardry. Expect eye-catching patchwork panels, subtle branding, and the kind of craftsmanship that turns heads at the skate park and on the street. Whether you’re lacing up for a day out or adding to your sneaker display, the Half Cab’s blend of heritage and high fashion makes it a must-have.

This collection is more than just a stylish update but is also a celebration of global creativity. For collectors, the limited nature of the release (and the handmade feel of each pair) adds serious cachet. For those who love versatile, standout pieces, these sneakers are a dream: they pair effortlessly with everything from denim skirts to tailored trousers. Plus, there’s something empowering about wearing footwear that tells a story. Each patch and stitch reflects hours of artistry and a deep respect for tradition. The Vans OTW x FDMTL collection feels genuinely special, especially now that we’re living with mass-produced goods.

]]>

For most people like me, eyeglasses are daily essentials, and we don’t really think about the design most of the time. Rarely are they both functional and fashionable. Of course, you can choose different frames and designs, but those often come secondary to whether they help us see better. Sunglasses are a bit more of a fashion statement for some, but even then, if you’re being practical, as long as they shield your eyes from the sun, you’re good.

But some brands can bring the two together. That’s exactly what Jacques Marie Mage delivers with their new Éditions Pliables collection: their very first series of foldable eyewear that blends cutting-edge design with everyday practicality. Imagine folding your glasses down into a compact size so they easily fit inside your pocket, purse, or backpack. That’s the key appeal of Éditions Pliables (which means “foldable editions” in French).

Designer: Jacques Marie Mage

These glasses are carefully engineered to fold up small, making them perfect for people on the move—whether you’re traveling across the globe or just heading out to lunch. This innovative approach is inspired by old-fashioned travel accessories like pocket binoculars and vintage folding opera glasses, but with a fully modern twist and a quality you can see and feel.

What really sets the Éditions Pliables collection apart are the thoughtful, luxurious details. You’ll notice the hairline-engraved wire rims, which elegantly transition from a delicate 2mm width at the eye to a striking 4mm at the brow, adding a touch of character and sophistication to each frame. The glasses also feature custom monoblock hinges for a seamless, durable fold and new pill-shaped nose pads that are beveled for enhanced comfort and stability. For extra style, the tailfin-shaped temple tips stand out—not only in their unique form but with recessed volumes that provide a subtle, architectural accent.

Each pair of Éditions Pliables is made in Japan, a country known for its high standards in eyewear manufacturing. The frames combine strong yet lightweight titanium, accented with acetate for a comfortable, stylish look. The real star is the ingenious folding mechanism, which nearly disappears into the design when you’re wearing them. And when you’re ready to tuck them away, it lets you snap the glasses closed with ease. Of course, great design isn’t just about what you wear—it’s also about how you carry it. That’s why these frames come with a brand-new, travel-sized, top-loading eyewear case. It’s the perfect companion for life on the go, making it simple to stash your glasses in any bag or pocket and keep them protected.

Another reason the Éditions Pliables collection stands out: each model is produced in limited numbers and comes with its own custom folding case and cleaning kit. This makes them a hot pick for fashion fans and eyewear collectors alike, offering something both useful and unique. If you love owning accessories no one else has—or you appreciate good design—then these glasses are sure to be a favorite.

Nike’s 3D Printed FlyWeb Sports Bra: Design Innovation That’s Changing Athletic Performance https://www.yankodesign.com/2025/06/30/nikes-3d-printed-flyweb-sports-bra-design-innovation-thats-changing-athletic-performance/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=nikes-3d-printed-flyweb-sports-bra-design-innovation-thats-changing-athletic-performance Mon, 30 Jun 2025 17:20:28 +0000 https://www.yankodesign.com/?p=562170

]]>

When Faith Kipyegon stepped onto the track in Paris wearing Nike’s FlyWeb sports bra, she carried hopes for a sub-four-minute mile. She also wore the future of performance sportswear: a 3D printed garment that challenges decades of athletic apparel design. The convergence of computational design, additive manufacturing, and athletic performance has produced Nike’s first 3D printed sports bra. This development represents a fundamental shift in how performance apparel gets conceived, designed, and manufactured. The FlyWeb addresses problems traditional sports bras have never solved.

Designer: Nike

Traditional sports bras face engineering constraints that limit their effectiveness in enhancing athletic performance. Multiple fabric layers create support but trap moisture and heat, increasing core body temperature by 2-3°F during intense exercise. Seams cause friction during extended movement. Standard manufacturing prevents true customization for individual athletes. Nike’s design team, led by Vice President of Apparel Innovation Janett Nichol, approached these limitations as design opportunities.

The Computational Design Breakthrough

The FlyWeb bra emerges from algorithms, not pattern pieces. Nike’s engineers used computational design to determine optimal material placement for each athlete’s specific needs. The software analyzes stress points, movement patterns, and thermal requirements to generate custom lattice structures. Multiple variables are processed simultaneously, including stress distribution, thermal management, material properties, and manufacturing constraints. The system generates hundreds of design iterations optimized for specific performance criteria.

This approach produces garments impossible to create through traditional manufacturing. Variable-density zones provide targeted support where needed, while maximizing airflow in heat-generating areas. The result is a continuous structure that varies in thickness according to support requirements, featuring intricate lattice patterns that enhance breathability while maintaining structural integrity.

Nike selected thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as the base material after conducting extensive testing to meet athletic performance requirements. TPU offers flexibility without compromising durability, which is essential for high-impact sports where equipment failure can create problems. The material’s moisture-wicking properties address one of traditional sports bras’ biggest weaknesses, reducing moisture retention by 40% compared to conventional multi-layer designs. The 3D printing process enables variable material density within a single garment. Support zones feature denser TPU structures while flexibility areas maintain lighter patterns.

User Experience and Performance Validation

Faith Kipyegon’s response to the FlyWeb prototype validates the design approach in ways laboratory testing cannot. She described the bra as “friendly,” feedback Nike executives had never received about sports bras. She integrated the prototype into her training routine without prompting, continuing to wear it during sessions in Kenya between testing periods.

Faith Kipyegon Training

“This opens the door to entirely new ideas for how we design and build high-performance apparel going forward. It creates new possibilities for how athletes experience sport through what they wear.” Janett Nichol, Nike VP of Apparel Innovation

Dr. Sarah Martinez, sports biomechanics researcher at Stanford University, notes the significance: “When elite athletes voluntarily adopt new equipment into established routines, it indicates genuine performance benefit. The FlyWeb represents validated development, not technological novelty.” Nike’s testing revealed athletes experienced 25% less chafing during extended training sessions, while core body temperature remained stable during high-intensity workouts.

The development process involved extensive feedback loops with athletes, with prototypes undergoing testing in Kenya with Kipyegon and other distance runners. Each iteration incorporated biomechanical data and subjective comfort assessments. The team discovered that traditional sports bra design assumptions didn’t hold for elite athletes. Support requirements varied significantly based on running gait, body composition, and individual preferences. 3D printing enabled the accommodation of these variables in ways that traditional manufacturing cannot match.

Manufacturing and Industry Change

The FlyWeb project signals broader manufacturing change that extends far beyond Nike’s laboratory. Traditional textile production involves fiber creation, fabric weaving, pattern cutting, and assembly. These multiple stages create waste, require inventory, and limit customization. 3D printing collapses these stages into a single digital-to-physical process, eliminating fabric waste and enabling true mass customization.

The 3D printed wearables market is expanding rapidly, projected to grow from $6.1 billion in 2025 to $13.2 billion by 2035. Nike’s FlyWeb project provides a roadmap for this change, demonstrating how established brands can integrate additive manufacturing into performance product development.

Other major brands are responding. Adidas has developed multiple 3D printed footwear lines, including the Futurecraft 3D and Climacool series, partnering with Carbon for commercial production. Multiple brands, including New Balance and Reebok, have adopted 3D printing for specialized applications. Even luxury fashion is embracing the technology, with New York Embroidery Studio integrating Stratasys 3D printers for haute couture applications.

The broader implications touch on manufacturing localization, supply chain resilience, and economic models. Instead of manufacturing in low-cost regions and shipping globally, brands could operate distributed 3D printing networks closer to consumers. This model offers resilience benefits demonstrated during recent supply chain disruptions, reducing dependency on international shipping while enabling rapid response to demand changes.

Design Philosophy and Future Applications

The FlyWeb bra’s visual impact emerges from functional requirements. Lattice patterns optimize airflow while maintaining structural integrity. Continuous construction eliminates friction points. Every design element serves performance. This approach aligns with modernist design principles where form follows function, achieving visual distinction through honest expression of purpose.

The breakthrough opportunity lies in personalization at scale. 3D body scanning combined with computational design could produce garments tailored to individual body geometry and movement patterns, enabling every athlete to have equipment optimized for their specific requirements. Future iterations could integrate smart textiles, biometric sensors, and responsive materials. Sports bras that monitor heart rate, adjust compression based on activity level, or change thermal properties based on environmental conditions become possible.

Near-term applications extend across industries: compression garments for injury prevention and recovery, climate-adaptive clothing with variable insulation properties, ergonomic workwear designed for specific occupational functions, medical garments with integrated monitoring capabilities, and adaptive clothing for individuals with mobility challenges.

For designers and product developers, the FlyWeb project offers valuable insights that transcend sports apparel. Technology should solve genuine user problems. The 3D printing serves performance enhancement, not novelty demonstration. User feedback drives successful iteration better than laboratory testing alone. Manufacturing method influences design possibilities. By embracing 3D printing’s unique capabilities (variable density, complex geometries, continuous construction), Nike created something impossible with traditional methods.

Interdisciplinary collaboration produces breakthrough development. Material scientists, software engineers, athletes, and designers worked together to solve complex challenges no single discipline could address independently. The result is a product that serves users effectively while opening new possibilities for creative expression in athletic performance design.

Key Questions About 3D Printed Sports Apparel

What makes Nike’s FlyWeb different from traditional sports bras?

FlyWeb uses 3D printed TPU with computational lattice design for continuous construction, 40% better moisture management, and complete customization based on individual athlete body scans and movement analysis.

How does 3D printing improve athletic performance?

3D printing enables variable density zones for targeted support, integrated airflow channels, elimination of chafing-causing seams, and personalized fit optimization impossible with traditional cut-and-sew manufacturing.

When will consumers be able to purchase 3D printed sports apparel?

Nike plans to launch the FlyWeb sports bra commercially by 2028, with additional 3D printed performance apparel categories following as the technology scales for mass production.

As digital fabrication technologies mature, the boundaries between digital and physical creation continue blurring. For designers, the message remains clear: understand your users, solve real problems, and let function guide aesthetic decisions. The FlyWeb project demonstrates that when these principles combine with advanced manufacturing capabilities, the results can change entire industries while serving human performance in ways previously impossible.

While I like my bags mostly in traditional designs, every once in a while I use one that’s more of a conversation starter, whether it’s because of the print, the color, or the design. If there’s one thing that can instantly lift your spirits and add a dash of whimsy to your wardrobe, whatever you’re wearing, it’s a bag that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still manages to be endlessly stylish.

Enter the Playful Volume 2 collection by Bao Bao Issey Miyake, with its irresistibly charming Meow bags. Bao Bao Issey Miyake has always been a brand that pushes the boundaries of design. Known for its geometric, origami-inspired bags, the brand fuses precise engineering with a sense of fun. The Playful Volume series, now in its second edition, takes this ethos to a whole new level. The Meow bags are a delightful tribute to our feline friends, and it’s clear that these bags were designed to make you smile.

Designer: Bao Bao Issey Miyake

The Meow bags take Bao Bao’s signature triangular motif and transform it into playful cat faces, complete with “whiskers,” pointy ears, expressive 3D lenticular eyes, and a tail-shaped handle. Each bag is a celebration of individuality, since the patterns on the face are slightly different on every bag, making each piece unique. The Meow bags are available in a range of colors, including black x off-white, blue x red, dark gray x yellow, and black, making them as versatile as they are eye-catching.

True to Bao Bao Issey Miyake’s reputation, these bags are marvels of construction. Made from lightweight yet durable materials, they fold and flex with your movements, making them as practical as they are fun. The adjustable straps and roomy interiors ensure that you can carry your daily essentials (and maybe a few cat treats) with ease. They still look a little small for me since I carry half my house everywhere I go, but they may be handy for days when I want to just be cute and light.

One of the best things about the Meow bags is how effortlessly they add personality to any outfit. Pair yours with a simple jeans-and-tee combo for a playful daytime look, or let it be the statement piece against a monochrome dress for a night out. The geometric design and bold motifs make these bags surprisingly easy to style, whether you lean towards minimalism or maximalist chic.

Sustainable fashion has gained traction over the past few years as we become more conscious about the choices we make when buying clothes, shoes, and accessories. We’re often told that we should buy things that will last for a long time rather than something we won’t use a couple of years down the line. But what if that sustainable choice would be to get something we can dispose of after wearing it a few times?

That’s the idea behind Dirt Shoes, a unique collaboration between design studio Basura (that’s dirt in Spanish) and yerba mate brand Yerba Madre. These conversation-starting footwear are not just a style statement but a step towards a cleaner, greener planet and invite us to rethink our footprint, literally and figuratively.

Designer: Basura for Yerba Madre

Dirt Shoes are not just inspired by nature but are actually made from it. Crafted entirely from compacted dirt, soil-derived materials, organic plant fibers, tree sap, and wildflower seeds, these shoes are a true celebration of what the earth offers. Every component comes directly from the earth and, most importantly, is designed to return to it, closing the life cycle loop in a way rarely seen in modern footwear. They didn’t use any synthetic dyes, chemical adhesives, or artificial binders but instead just used natural dyes and organic binding agents.

Another unique thing that this truly sustainable product offers is that each pair has wildflower seeds. As the shoes wear down, they will gradually crumble and release seeds into the soil. Each step you take then becomes an act of quiet ecological renewal. Now if you’re stepping on concrete most of the time though, you might be leaving a bit of natural trash behind so you have to make sure that you walk in areas where they can grow as they are discarded. Or at least sweep them off of the concrete if possible and into soil where they can actually grow.

Basura and Yerba Madre have combined advanced and traditional methods in the making of Dirt Shoes. Precision techniques like 3D printing are used alongside artisanal handcrafting to shape and assemble each pair. The soil products used are sourced from farms that practice sustainable agriculture, ensuring every material is both responsibly gathered and environmentally friendly. It might seem counterintuitive to wear something that’s easily disposable, but that’s where Dirt Shoes’ new perspective comes in. Instead of contributing to landfill waste, which is where most of our shoes end up, your footwear gently returns to the earth, leaving behind the promise of new wildflowers.
