What If Your Handbag Was Also A Hi-Fi Wireless Speaker?

]]>

No matter how much you talk about wearable tech it is never enough. Fashion and technology are walking hand-in-hand at various platforms reinventing the wheel of how and what we wear. In that league, Nik Bentel Studio, which has been pushing the boundaries of product design and fashion to exemplary levels has come up with a 4-channel mixer and speaker that women can carry like a bag.

What? A sound system that doubles as a bag? Boombox, are you listening? This uncanny bag + speaker + mixer doesn’t have your heavy, box-like aesthetic; instead, it takes on a chic appearance – sort of like EDC for women. It is inspired by Nik Bentel’s own Tati Bag, which has a nice leather sheen and top flap, which pulls up from the body of the bag to reveal the interior section. The Tati Fête Bag: Speaker + Mixer shares the same appearance, but with a transparent body revealing its electronic guts, yet being aptly functional.

Designer: Nik Bentel Studio

This unconventional speaker-mixer hybrid continues on Bentel’s exploration of unusual yet functional. It may not thrive on the bulky aesthetic of the boombox, but it does wear the same usability fabric, where you can carry quality music along, playing in the hand instead of above the shoulder, right behind your ear.

The speaker bag is designed to be your personal sound system but will be available in limited quantity. The onboard mixer features a functional 4-channel audio mixer and would set you back $400. It is available in two: black and white color options. Each of these speaker bags is made by hand in the designer’s New York studio through precision-machined translucent acrylic, which showcases the circuitry and hardware inside, and delivers a nice retro-modern appeal.

Instead of the original inspiration’s leather top flap, this 8″ x 12″ x 1–2″ bag features a magnetic closure and is powered by DC 5V. Equipped with a 4-channel mixer, the built-in speaker is compatible with CD players, phones, and amplifiers, and includes both 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm stereo jack plugs. It connects wirelessly via Bluetooth and supports a stereo/mono switch for added mixing flexibility. Designed to be carried as handbag, this mixer combines functionality and fashion, making it both a statement piece and a tribute to music culture. For a music lover, it’s a stylish way to show their passion.

A cool aspect of this speaker bag is a built-in LED display that shows decibel levels in real time. The adjustable display is made of a 16-bit two-color LED matrix and is nicely positioned to create a fun visual flair. The controls on the speaker bag are simple, you have a main volume knob and four-channel knobs for each option.

5 Best Retro-Inspired Gadgets To Add Vintage Charm To Your Modern Life In July 2025

The most fascinating technology today isn’t chasing tomorrow’s trends—it’s mining yesterday’s design wisdom with modern precision. We’re living through an amazing moment where cutting-edge gadgets embrace pixelated displays, transparent housings, and tactile interfaces that feel borrowed from decades past. These are more than nostalgic novelties; they are thoughtful reimaginings that prove the best innovation often comes from looking backward while moving forward.

From smartwatches that channel ’80s digital timepieces to cameras hidden inside beloved virtual pets, today’s retro-inspired gadgets transform mundane tech interactions into moments of genuine delight. They reject the sleek uniformity dominating most consumer electronics in favor of personality, texture, and visual storytelling that makes technology feel more human. The five gadgets featured here represent this perfect marriage of nostalgia and innovation. Dive in and have a look!

1. Retro-Future Wrist Tech

The Retro-Future Wrist Tech concept abandons conventional smartwatch design with its deliberately rugged, industrial aesthetic that feels more like a piece of functional equipment than a fashion accessory. The pixelated display font evokes early digital watches, while the plastic bezel and visible fasteners embrace the kind of purposeful engineering that made ’80s Casio watches legendary among tech enthusiasts.

This smartwatch reframes wearable technology through a nostalgic lens, diverging sharply from today’s polished, edge-to-edge displays in favor of tactile authenticity and functional restraint. The monochrome screen and oversized pixel typography deliver both clarity and charm, reminiscent of Game Boy interfaces or retro computing systems that prioritized readability over visual sophistication. Adding this timepiece to your daily routine brings an instant dose of retro-futuristic character that stands apart in a sea of generic smartwatches.

What we like

  • A unique aesthetic that sets you apart from mainstream smartwatch users.
  • Durable design built for everyday wear and outdoor activities.

What we dislike

  • Limited availability as a concept design rather than a mass-produced product.
  • Monochrome displays may lack the versatility of full-color screens.

2. Transparent Sony Walkman Concept

The transparent Sony Walkman concept merges Blade Runner aesthetics with classic cassette nostalgia, creating a device that feels both retro and futuristic through its crystal-clear housing that reveals every internal component. The visible mechanical elements and gear systems remind you of luxury watch movements, where the engineering becomes the primary visual attraction rather than something hidden away.

The pixel-perfect UI elements visible through the transparent housing suggest computational intelligence, while the tactile control buttons along the top edge deliberately echo ’80s Sony recorders. Integrating this transparent Walkman into your daily routine elevates music listening from a mundane activity to a visual experience that offers exceptional form and function. The see-through design transforms the device into a piece of kinetic art, where watching the mechanical components work becomes as engaging as listening to your favorite albums.

What we like

  • Stunning visual design that showcases internal mechanics as aesthetic features.
  • Bridges analog and digital technologies in a meaningful way.

What we dislike

  • Concept status means it’s not available for purchase.
  • Transparent housing may be more fragile than traditional solid cases.

3. RetroWave 7-in-1 Radio

The RetroWave 7-in-1 Radio combines authentic Japanese design sensibilities with modern emergency preparedness, featuring a tactile tuning dial that recalls the golden age of radio broadcasting alongside contemporary features like Bluetooth connectivity and solar charging. This device proves that retro aesthetics and practical functionality can coexist, offering seven different functions within a single, beautifully designed package.

It offers a nostalgic exterior and also serves as a comprehensive emergency tool with a built-in flashlight, SOS alarm, hand-crank charging, and power bank capabilities that make it genuinely useful for both everyday listening and unexpected situations. The blend of AM, FM, and shortwave reception with modern streaming options creates a bridge between analog and digital audio experiences.

Click Here to Buy Now: $89.00

What we like

  • Seven functions in one device provide excellent value and versatility.
  • Emergency features make it genuinely useful for outdoor activities and power outages.

What we dislike

  • Larger size compared to modern portable speakers may limit portability.
  • Hand-crank charging requires physical effort during extended use.

4. TamagoniHAI

Called the TamagoniHAI, this product transforms the beloved ’90s virtual pet into a miniature camcorder, cleverly hiding modern recording technology within the iconic egg-shaped shell that defined a generation’s relationship with digital companions. Created by Hairo Satoh, this inventive mod captures the playful spirit of the original while serving an entirely different purpose than caring for pixelated creatures.

This adorable gadget embodies the kind of creative thinking that makes retro-tech feel fresh and relevant, combining the tactile satisfaction of physical buttons with the surprise of hidden functionality. The familiar form factor immediately triggers nostalgia, while the unexpected camera feature adds a layer of intrigue that makes every photo session feel like a secret mission.

What we like

  • Combines nostalgia with practical functionality for unique photo opportunities.
  • Its compact size makes it perfect for discreet photography or travel documentation.

What we dislike

  • DIY nature means limited availability and potential technical challenges.
  • Camera quality may not match dedicated photography equipment.

5. Moondrop Ultrasonic Earbuds

The Moondrop Ultrasonic earbuds achieve a perfect balance between transparency and sci-fi aesthetics, combining see-through housing with sophisticated dual-driver hybrid technology that delivers professional-quality sound. The visual design feels borrowed from futuristic films, while the technical specifications—including FRA Lithium-Magnesium alloy balanced armature tweeters and 13mm sapphire diaphragm drivers—promise audio performance that rivals premium over-ear headphones.

This hybrid TWS design showcases its internal components as design features rather than hiding them, creating earbuds that function as both high-performance audio equipment and conversation pieces. The combination of DD+BA drivers on each side, professionally tuned by engineers, ensures that the stunning aesthetics don’t compromise the primary function of delivering exceptional sound quality. These earbuds add a touch of retro-futuristic sophistication to your daily audio experience, making the simple act of listening to music feel more intentional and premium.

What we like

  • Exceptional sound quality with professional-grade dual-driver configuration.
  • Striking transparent design that showcases premium internal components.

What we dislike

  • Higher price point compared to standard wireless earbuds.
  • Transparent housing may show dirt or debris more easily than solid designs.

Conclusion

These five retro-inspired gadgets are a source of inspiration, as they showcase how great technology often comes from looking backward while moving forward. Each device takes familiar design languages from past decades and reinterprets them through contemporary capabilities, creating products that feel both nostalgic and innovative.

You could be drawn to the industrial aesthetics of the Retro-Future smartwatch, the playful creativity of the Tamagotchi camera, the transparent beauty of the Sony Walkman concept, the practical versatility of the RetroWave radio, or the sophisticated transparency of the Moondrop earbuds -all the gadgets offer ways to inject personality and history into your everyday tech interactions.

Voice Recorder Concept Brings Teenage Engineering Style To Content Creators

]]>

It’s easy to forget that not too long ago, recording audio meant carrying a chunky device, popping in a tape, and hoping the batteries would last through your interview. These days, most people just pull out their phones and tap a recorder app when inspiration strikes. For a quick voice note or a funny soundbite, that works just fine. But when it comes to professional content, podcasts, field recordings, or that one interview you really need to get right, your phone’s built-in mic can start to feel a little underwhelming.

That’s why dedicated voice recorders have managed to hang around, quietly serving journalists, musicians, and anyone else who cares about sound quality. The right device can turn a chaotic moment into crisp, usable audio, and it doesn’t hurt if it looks good doing it. Enter this playful concept design, which borrows its vibe from the instantly recognizable world of Teenage Engineering. While it’s not actually from Teenage Engineering, it captures the spirit that’s made their products a favorite among designers and audio geeks alike.

Designer: Andrew Rosek

If you’ve ever ogled a Teenage Engineering synth or speaker, you’ll spot the influences right away. There’s the clean, geometric silhouette, with buttons and dials that beg to be pressed and turned. Playful color accents pop against a mostly monochrome body, and the controls are clearly labeled, making the device feel approachable whether you’re a seasoned producer or just getting your feet wet. The display is minimal, but it tells you exactly what you need to know, no more, no less.

The magic of Teenage Engineering’s designs lies in their ability to balance whimsy with utility. Every part feels intentional, from the tactile feedback of a button to the satisfying click of a dial. They’re not afraid of a little fun, but they never let the aesthetics get in the way of usability. This voice recorder concept channels that same energy, offering a device that looks as at home on a studio desk as it does in someone’s jacket pocket.

Of course, it’s important to remember this is just a concept, dreamed up by a designer with a clear love of playful minimalism. Teenage Engineering itself is unlikely to branch out into voice recorders anytime soon, given its focus on synths, speakers, and quirky musical gear for a devoted audience. Still, it’s fun to imagine a future where even the humble voice recorder gets a bit of design love, elevating it from a tool you hide in your bag to something you actually want to show off.

For anyone who’s ever wished audio gear could be as inspiring as the sounds it captures, this concept is a tiny window into what could be. Sometimes, the best ideas come from mixing a little nostalgia with a lot of imagination, and maybe a dash of Swedish design flair.

If you’re a content creator who is constantly on the go, then the right gear can make all the difference between a smooth, inspired workflow and missed moments. Today’s content creators juggle devices, shoot in unpredictable environments, and edit on the fly, demanding tools that are as adaptable as their schedules. You could be capturing street photography at sunrise, vlogging your next adventure, or collaborating in bustling cities – your setup always needs to be streamlined, reliable, and ready for anything.

This adaptability means fewer bags and less chaos—just streamlined, stress-free mobility.

With the Lancer300, creators can keep drones, cameras, and laptops all in one place, each in its secure compartment. Imagine hanging out in your dorm room, when suddenly someone suggests watching that viral TikTok compilation everyone’s been talking about. Instead of crowding around a tiny phone screen, you casually pull out what looks like an oversized coffee tumbler, tap a button, and boom, your wall transforms into a massive vertical cinema. Welcome to the world of the JMGO PicoPlay+, where entertainment gets a serious upgrade without any of the usual hassle.

This isn’t your typical projector that requires engineering degrees to set up properly. The PicoPlay+ weighs about as much as your laptop and fits comfortably in any backpack, yet it packs enough technological wizardry to make your living space feel like a premium entertainment venue. Think of it as that friend who somehow makes every gathering more fun just by showing up, except this friend never gets tired or asks to borrow money.

Designer: JMGO

Click Here to Buy Now: PicoPlay (White), PicoPlay+ (Black)

The genius lies in its chameleon-like personality. One moment it’s projecting crystal-clear 1080P visuals with 460 ISO lumens of brightness that actually work in normal lighting conditions. The next moment, you flip a switch and it becomes a powerful 360-degree Bluetooth speaker that fills your entire space with rich, immersive sound. No additional gadgets, no complicated setup routines, just pure versatility packed into a sleek cylindrical design.

Here’s where things get really interesting: vertical projection mode. While traditional projectors force you to tilt your head sideways for mobile content, the PicoPlay+ flips the script entirely. Instagram Reels, TikTok videos, and YouTube Shorts explode into life-sized vertical glory, transforming your social media browsing experience into something genuinely cinematic. Your friends will definitely want to know how you managed to make scrolling through feeds feel like attending a private screening.

The built-in Google TV integration means you’re getting access to over 10,000 apps right out of the box, including Netflix, without needing any external streaming devices cluttering your setup. Personalized recommendations appear instantly, and switching between different platforms feels seamless and intuitive. Gaming, streaming, social media consumption, all happen with zero lag and maximum convenience. Content discovery becomes effortless when everything lives in one unified interface.

Smart features elevate this device beyond basic projection. The gimbal-based auto-correction system automatically adjusts your image regardless of angle, so whether you’re pointing it at the ceiling, wall, or that awkward corner spot, everything looks perfectly aligned. Touch controls mean you can operate everything without hunting for remotes in dark rooms, while the customizable action button gives you one-tap access to your favorite apps and functions.

But perhaps the most delightful surprise comes from the ambient lighting system. Colorful RGB lights synchronize with your music, creating dynamic light shows that pulse and shift with every beat. Whether you’re hosting a chill evening with acoustic playlists or pumping up the energy for weekend parties, the atmospheric effects add that extra layer of immersion that transforms ordinary hangouts into memorable experiences.

The portability factor cannot be overstated. At just 85 millimeters in diameter, this device slides effortlessly into travel bags, dorm room setups, or weekend camping gear. An all-black power bank stand provides over four hours of continuous operation while doubling as a stable platform, making it perfect for outdoor movie nights, rooftop screenings, or impromptu presentations. Weekend adventures just got significantly more entertaining.

The 8-watt speaker system delivers surprisingly robust audio that eliminates the need for separate sound equipment, perfect for the standalone Bluetooth Speaker mode. HDMI 2.1 connectivity with ARC support, USB ports, and Type-C charging ensure compatibility with virtually any device you might want to connect. The 25,000-hour LED lifespan means this device will outlast several smartphone upgrades.

What makes the PicoPlay+ special isn’t just its impressive feature list, it’s how effortlessly it adapts to different situations and social contexts. Whether you’re creating a cozy movie atmosphere for two, energizing a study group with vertical content, or setting the mood for larger gatherings with synchronized lighting effects, this device responds intuitively to whatever vibe you’re trying to create. The PicoPlay+ will be available in the US soon, but if you happen to be in France, hit the link to get yours. Entertainment just became infinitely more flexible, social, and genuinely exciting.

No matter if you are a casual listener or someone who performs on the big stage, Audio Technica has got the right pair for you.

Riding on the success of the ATH-TWX9 released in 2022, the successor is here in the shape of ATH-TWX9MK2 noise-cancelling wireless earbuds. The TWX9 garnered a lot of attention because of its sound quality and unique self-sanitizing capabilities. Even though I’ve never gotten my hands on the pair, I have used LG Tone Free FN7 earbuds that have a similar feature aimed at audiophiles who care about hygiene.

Designer: Audio Technica

ATH-TWX9 wireless earbuds retain the stem design while adding a lot of upgrades that should pit them well against the likes of Sony, Bose, and Technics. The form factor is a tad sleeker, and the oval housing promises a secure grip for better stability. The buds come with IPX4 water-resistance protection for protection against the odd water splashes. However, the case gets no such protection rating, which makes it vulnerable to water splashes or a dunk in the shallowest of pools. The self-cleaning feature comes courtesy of the integrated UV LED sterilization system that sanitizes the buds when they are resting inside the case. They have made the buds and the case more resistant to smudges and scratches with a matte finish and satin accents.

The real deal maker is the improved sound driver that is more sensitive towards mid-range and dynamic range. Also, Audio Technica has certified them for High-Resolution Wireless. This means the vocals will be crisp and the low end should have more rumble, just like some of the open-back headphones. Supported audio codecs, including Qualcomm aptX Adaptive (up to 96 kHz 24-bit), the standard AAC, and the SBC formats should suffice the needs of every type of listener. Another major consideration is the inclusion of feed-forward and feed-backward MEMS microphones for hybrid active noise cancellation. These microphones have a frequency response ranging from 20 Hz to 10 kHz with a sensitivity of −38dB (1V/Pa at 1 kHz), making them ideal for clear calls in the noisiest of environments.

They come with a runtime of six hours when ANC is on and up to 18.5 hours in the case. This number is even more when the ANC is turned off.  ATH-TWX9 comes pre-loaded with nature and meditation sounds for kickstarting your day on a positive note or winding down in the evening. The earbuds will come in black or white color options with a price tag of 38,500 Yen (approximately $270). They’ll be released initially in Japan on July 11, 2025, with a global release coming soon after, with an expected price of $300, just like their predecessors.

]]>

When premium design meets precision engineering, you get something as exciting and inducing as the O Turntable. The brainchild of iconic British guitar amp maker Orange Amps, the turntable is the first from the company, yet is built with music aficionados in mind who yearn for high-fidelity vinyl sound. The turntable is designed and created based on decades of experience in audio performance, which Orange Amps has managed on stage since 1968, when the company made its first guitar value amplifier.

Since revolutionizing the guitar valve amplifier design and sound technology, our favorite amp company has come a long way. It now makes consumer audio devices, including headphones, award-winning Bluetooth speakers, and of course, all kinds of amps for musicians. With the launch of the O Turntable, Orange has added another feather to its cap and entered a new product category, which, with the O Turntable is surely going to experience some change.

Designer: Orange Amps

If you look back in time; the kind of experience Orange Amps entails, one would actually expect some sort of retro-modern impression on the turntable. However, the iconic brand has taken a very contemporary approach, the O Turntable blends modern convenience with audiophile-level features you’d expect from the company. Built from scratch in the UK, this plug-and-play device borrows the goodness of a record player and brings Orange’s sound heritage from the stage to your drawing room.

To ensure that, the interestingly designed O Turntable flaunts a white gloss plinth overlaid with a ‘Voice of the World’ slipmat. The turntable has a belt-driven deck and features a 23mm high-mass phenolic platter, which according to the company, assures very smooth rotation and speed stability, courtesy of the flywheel effect that is actually possible in very expensive models. The vibration for stable sound playback is further controlled by the use of a custom PCB and aluminum pulley on the 24V low-noise synchronous motor. There is also an auto-bias tonearm and moving magnet phono stage built into the O Turntable, so it is ready to play right from the word go.

The clean, lifestyle-oriented appearance of the turntable is maintained by the power switch hidden underneath the plinth. Its versatility, however, is assured by its compatibility with a wide range of audio devices that include the Orange Pyramid System. If you want a high-fidelity partner for your vinyl collection, that doesn’t break the bank, you can trust the O Turntable. It is slated to go on sale, through Orange Amps, in late July, starting with the USA, and followed by other countries. The glossy white vinyl player will set you back £499 (approximately $699) and come stored in a transparent glass box.

award-icon

Nothing’s debut into over-ear audio territory arrives with all the hallmarks we’ve come to expect from the London-based company. Transparent design elements reveal internal components while premium materials create a visual statement that feels both futuristic and familiar. The collaboration with KEF brings serious audiophile credentials to a brand known primarily for smartphones and earbuds.

This first venture into the competitive over-ear market represents more than just product expansion for Nothing. The Headphone (1) embodies the company’s design philosophy while addressing real-world listening needs through innovative tactile controls and advanced acoustic engineering. After extensive testing, these headphones prove that transparent aesthetics can coexist with substantial performance gains.

Designer: Nothing

Aesthetics

The transparent construction immediately sets these headphones apart from anything currently available in the premium audio space. Strategic cutouts reveal acoustic chambers and internal components without compromising structural integrity or acoustic performance. The translucent elements catch light beautifully, creating visual depth that changes depending on the viewing angle and ambient lighting conditions around your workspace or listening environment.

Material selection demonstrates thoughtful consideration for both durability and visual appeal. Formed aluminum strengthens key structural points while maintaining the sleek profile that Nothing has perfected across its product lineup. Precision CNC components add tactile richness to areas where fingers naturally rest, creating subtle texture variations that enhance the overall sensory experience beyond pure visual impact.

The color palette remains deliberately restrained, with black and white variants that allow the transparent elements to take center stage. This approach avoids the flashy aesthetics that often plague gaming-focused headphones, instead creating something that feels appropriate for professional environments while maintaining enough personality to spark conversations about design choices and material innovation.

PU memory foam elements provide visual contrast through their matte finish against the glossy transparent sections. These soft-touch areas break up what could otherwise feel like an overly clinical aesthetic, adding warmth and approachability to the overall design language. The interplay between hard and soft materials creates a visual rhythm that guides the eye naturally around the headphone’s form.

The telescopic arms integrate seamlessly into the overall aesthetic rather than appearing as afterthoughts. Their silent adjustment mechanism eliminates the mechanical clicks and squeaks that plague many competitors, while the clean lines maintain the minimalist approach that defines Nothing’s design philosophy. Every visible component feels intentional rather than merely functional.

Internal component visibility through the transparent sections creates an almost architectural quality to the overall design. The acoustic chambers become part of the visual story, showing rather than hiding the engineering complexity that drives audio performance. This transparency builds trust by demonstrating the substantial hardware investment that justifies the premium pricing positioning.

Ergonomics

Comfort during extended listening sessions exceeds expectations for headphones in this price category. The memory foam ear cushions mold naturally to different head shapes while maintaining consistent seal quality for optimal acoustic performance. Weight distribution feels balanced across the headband, preventing the front-heavy sensation that sometimes accompanies driver-heavy designs in this segment.

The 329-gram total weight strikes an optimal balance between substantial feel and extended comfort during long listening sessions. The headband padding distributes pressure evenly across the crown, while the ear cup design accommodates different ear sizes without creating uncomfortable pressure points. This attention to anthropometric considerations becomes particularly noticeable during multi-hour creative work sessions.

The tactile control system represents a bold departure from industry trends toward touch-sensitive interfaces. The Roller provides precise volume adjustment with satisfying mechanical feedback that eliminates guesswork during blind operation. Its dual-function design allows quick access to play/pause controls while long-press actions toggle between noise cancellation modes without fumbling through smartphone apps.

Paddle controls for track navigation feel intuitive after the minimal adjustment period. The left-right push mechanism for previous/next tracks becomes second nature, while the hold-to-scrub functionality offers precise seeking through longer audio content. This physical approach eliminates the frustration of accidental touch inputs that plague many contemporary headphone designs, especially during physical activity or movement.

The Button’s customizable functionality adapts to different user workflows through the companion app. Default smart assistant activation works reliably across platforms, while Nothing device owners gain access to Channel Hop and other ecosystem-specific features. The physical click provides clear feedback that confirms command registration, reducing the uncertainty that often accompanies voice-activated controls in noisy environments.

Oil-resistant ear cushions maintain their texture and appearance despite extended contact with skin and makeup. The telescopic adjustment mechanism operates smoothly without loosening over time, maintaining the precise fit that supports both comfort and acoustic seal integrity. These durability considerations matter significantly for headphones intended for daily professional use or extended creative sessions.

The silent adjustment mechanism deserves particular recognition for eliminating the audible clicks that interrupt listening experiences during fit adjustments. This seemingly minor detail demonstrates the comprehensive approach to user experience design that extends beyond obvious features into subtle interaction refinements that improve daily usability.

Performance

The collaboration with KEF brings immediately audible improvements to sound reproduction across all frequency ranges. Vocal reproduction stands out as particularly impressive, with the precision tuning bringing out vocal elements exactly as intended by recording engineers. The midrange delivers clean and crisp performance, allowing voices in music, podcasts, and calls to cut through with remarkable clarity and natural presence. There’s warmth without sacrificing detail, and every vocal inflection remains discernible without sibilance or muddiness affecting the listening experience.

Bass response demonstrates both strength and exceptional control throughout various musical genres. The custom 40mm dynamic driver, combined with adaptive bass enhancement technology, delivers deep and immersive low frequencies that provide power without overwhelming other frequency ranges. The bass remains articulate across different musical styles, with fine-tuning capabilities through the Nothing X app ensuring personalized impact without sacrificing overall tonal balance.

Treble frequencies reproduce with remarkable finesse, offering sparkle and airiness that highlights subtle instrument nuances like cymbal crashes and string harmonics. The nickel-plated diaphragm ensures high frequencies remain both clear and extended while maintaining smoothness that never becomes harsh during extended listening sessions. This approach enables fatigue-free enjoyment over long periods without the ear strain that affects many competing designs.

Soundstage and imaging performance exceeds expectations for closed-back headphones in this category. The integrated spatializer and built-in head tracking create an expansive audio field with precise instrument placement around the listener. This results in three-dimensional soundscapes that enhance everything from orchestral compositions to immersive movie soundtracks, with the head tracking maintaining stable positioning as you move naturally during use.

Dynamic range captures both quiet micro-details and powerful crescendos with equal precision and control. Advanced hybrid Active Noise Cancellation effectively eliminates environmental distractions while maintaining audio purity, and Transparency Mode seamlessly integrates ambient sounds when situational awareness becomes necessary. The impressively low noise floor allows pure, uncolored audio reproduction across all volume levels and listening conditions.

The real-time adaptive noise cancellation scans environmental conditions every 600ms, automatically adjusting cancellation strength to match changing acoustic environments. This intelligent approach eliminates the need for manual mode switching while maintaining optimal noise reduction effectiveness. The wear detection system monitors seal quality every 1875ms, ensuring consistent cancellation performance regardless of individual head shape variations.

Phone call performance delivers clear voice transmission without particularly standing out from the overall experience. The four-microphone array with AI-powered processing handles background noise adequately, though the magic really happens during music and movie playback where the KEF tuning truly shines. Call quality meets professional standards without reaching the exceptional levels achieved during multimedia consumption.

Battery performance supports extended use with an advertised 35 hours of playback time with noise cancellation enabled, extending to 80 hours with ANC disabled. Fast charging provides over two hours of listening time from just five minutes of charging, ensuring minimal downtime during busy schedules. Full charging does take around two hours, though. Connectivity options include high-resolution LDAC wireless, USB-C wired, and traditional 3.5mm jack compatibility for maximum versatility across different source devices.

Sustainability

Unlike most other brands, Nothing takes its environmental responsibility quite seriously. Material choices prioritize longevity over cost reduction, with formed aluminum and precision CNC components providing structural integrity that supports years of daily use. The memory foam maintains its shape and comfort properties despite repeated compression cycles, while oil-resistant surfaces resist degradation from skin contact and environmental exposure. These design decisions support extended product lifecycles that reduce electronic waste generation.

Plastic-free packaging eliminates unnecessary waste while protecting the product during shipping and retail display. This approach demonstrates that premium unboxing experiences don’t require excessive packaging materials that end up in landfills after brief use. The included soft-shell case provides long-term protection without relying on single-use protective films or excessive padding materials.

Durability testing exceeds industry standards with over 50 rigorous reliability assessments including drop tests, twist evaluations, sweat resistance, and extreme temperature exposure. This comprehensive approach ensures long-term performance that reduces the likelihood of premature replacement due to component failure. The nickel-plated diaphragm and reinforced internal structures support consistent performance over extended use periods.

The IP52 rating provides dust and water resistance that protects against common environmental hazards during daily use. This protection extends component lifespan by preventing moisture ingress and particle contamination that often cause premature failure in consumer electronics. The rating demonstrates a commitment to practical durability rather than just laboratory testing achievements.

And it’s not just the product itself that’s green. Environmental considerations permeate multiple aspects of the Headphone (1) design and manufacturing process. The 14.84 kg CO2e carbon footprint represents a conscious effort to minimize environmental impact during production, while 100% renewable energy powers final assembly operations. Amazon Climate Pledge-friendly certification provides third-party validation of the company’s sustainability commitments throughout the supply chain.

Value

At $299, the Headphone (1) positions itself strategically within the premium audio market without reaching flagship pricing territory. The KEF collaboration alone justifies significant portions of the asking price, bringing acoustic engineering expertise that typically costs considerably more in dedicated audiophile products. The transparent design adds visual appeal that commands attention while providing conversation-starting aesthetics for design-conscious users.

Bucking industry trends, the Headphone (1)’s tactile control system provides a differentiated user experience that sets these headphones apart from touch-heavy competitors, while ecosystem integration offers additional value for Nothing device owners. Advanced noise cancellation, spatial audio, and high-resolution codec support match or exceed offerings from established audio brands. Battery life, with or without ANC enabled, easily outperforms its competitors, while fast-charging capabilities ensure you rarely have an extended downtime.

Build quality and material selection suggest these headphones will maintain performance and appearance standards throughout extended use periods. The combination of durability testing, premium materials, and thoughtful design details supports the asking price while providing confidence in long-term satisfaction. For design enthusiasts and audio quality seekers, the value proposition remains compelling within this competitive price segment.

Customization options through the Nothing X app provide ongoing value that extends beyond initial purchase satisfaction. The eight-band EQ enables precise audio tuning for different musical preferences, while custom preset sharing creates community engagement opportunities. The ability to remap physical controls adapts the headphones to different workflows and usage patterns over time. All in all, it’s clear that the Nothing Headphone (1) wasn’t just made with superior audio performance in mind but with excellent user experience as well.

Verdict

Nothing’s entry into over-ear audio succeeds through thoughtful design integration and meaningful performance advantages rather than relying solely on aesthetic novelty. The KEF collaboration delivers legitimate audiophile credentials while the tactile control system provides a genuinely improved user experience over prevalent touch interfaces. Battery life, build quality, and a plethora of notable features justify the asking price within an increasingly competitive market segment.

The Nothing Headphone (1) represents a successful product category expansion that maintains Nothing’s design philosophy while addressing real audio performance needs. For users seeking distinctive aesthetics combined with serious acoustic engineering, these headphones deliver compelling value that extends beyond mere visual appeal. The transparent design will continue attracting attention, but the KEF-tuned sound quality ensures lasting satisfaction beyond initial impressions.

]]>

Let’s just be frank – the Teenage Engineering OP-1 wasn’t supposed to just be a ‘MIDI piano’, it was designed to be a powerful synth capable of playing, sampling, editing, looping, and even granulated synthesizing. Giving it 24 keys and the visual template of a keyboard might have made it appealing to most traditional musicians, but a true electronic music aficionado knows there’s versatility in breaking beyond that piano-style design.

Meet the OP-XY, Teenage Engineering’s latest offering that takes everything we loved about the OP-Z and cranks it up to eleven. The OP-XY is a no-compromise, dual-CPU boosted and fully rebuilt sequencer, sampler, and performance instrument, based on the much-loved workflow of the OP-Z. It ditches the piano keys for a sophisticated 16-track, 64-step sequencer layout, and uses every inch of real estate for an array of buttons and features that let you compose, sample, produce, and perform music in a much more liberating way.

Designer: Teenage Engineering

The design philosophy remains unmistakably Teenage Engineering, although the OP-XY sheds the brand’s signature fun-meets-functional color palette for something more brooding. The sleek black aluminum housing is both gorgeous and understated, featuring the same playful buttons and knobs but in a completely achromatic (greyscale) colorway that screams ‘serious musician’ rather than ‘creative songmaker’. The layout gets a complete overhaul while maintaining enough workflow familiarity that anyone running the OP-Z will be able to transition seamlessly through intuitive muscle memory.

The OP-XY replaces traditional keys with concrete production tools. You’ve got 8 individually sequenceable instrument tracks, 8 unique synth engines, 3 samplers, and 9 patterns. The 64-step sequencer operates across 4 pages of 16 steps each, giving you unprecedented control over your compositions. With 24-voice polyphony and multiple unique synth engines, plus a dedicated drum sampler, the OP-XY delivers room-filling sound through its built-in speaker while maintaining the portability that made its predecessors so beloved.

What sets the OP-XY apart is its comprehensive connectivity. The device features analogue inputs and outputs for a wide range of devices, a multi-out port for professional setups, and maintains the 16-hour USB-C rechargeable battery life that keeps the music going all day. The built-in microphone opens up endless sampling possibilities, while the enhanced processing power ensures your most complex sequences run without a hitch.

The buttons retain Teenage Engineering’s quirky iconography, complete with that signature learning curve that makes discovery so rewarding. You navigate through different functions for inputs, EQs, stems, sequences, and effects, each with its own distinctive visual language. The OP-XY’s interface invites exploration, with symbols and controls that become second nature once you dive into its workflow.

What makes the OP-XY particularly exciting is how it represents Teenage Engineering’s evolution from the OP-Z concept. The device extends and re-imagines the OP-Z workflows, taking the foundation of what made that device special and building something more mature and capable. The result is a powerful, ultra-portable sequencer, synth and sampler that can stack sounds against musical grids in an intricate 64-step sequencer.

The OP-XY represents Teenage Engineering’s continued push to expand the boundaries of what portable music production can be. Whether you’re crafting beats in a coffee shop, laying down ideas in a hotel room, or commanding a live performance, the OP-XY delivers the tools and flexibility to make it happen. The device takes everything we loved about the OP-Z and amplifies it into something even better.
